About North Kesteven District Council

North Kesteven District Council is the governing body for the district of North Kesteven, located in Lincolnshire, England. The council operates from its main offices in Sleaford, the administrative centre of the district.

The council is responsible for a range of local government services, including housing, planning, waste management, environmental health, and leisure services. It also plays a crucial role in community development, economic growth, and maintaining infrastructure. The district prides itself on a high quality of life, with low crime rates, excellent schools, and a commitment to sustainable development and green initiatives.

Governance within North Kesteven District Council is conducted by elected councillors, representing various wards across the district. These councillors work to address local issues, set policies, and ensure that the council’s services meet the needs of residents. The council operates under a leader and executive model, with shared decisions made by the executive being scrutinised by various committees to ensure transparency and accountability.

In recent years, North Kesteven District Council has focused on several key initiatives, including the development of affordable housing, enhancement of public amenities, and support for local businesses. The council has also been active in promoting tourism, leveraging the district’s historical and natural attractions to boost the local economy. The commitment to community engagement is evident in the council’s efforts to involve residents in decision-making processes through consultations and public meeting. The council consists of 43 councillors, with the majority being from the Conservative Party. The specific political makeup can fluctuate due to elections, by-elections, or changes in councillors' party affiliations, but the Conservatives have traditionally held a significant majority.

In addition to the Conservative majority, there are also councillors from other political parties and independent members. These typically include representatives from the Lincolnshire Independents, Labour Party and other minor parties or independent councillors who do not align with a specific political party. This mix ensures a range of perspectives and voices in council deliberations, although the Conservative majority allows them to drive the overall policy direction and decision-making processes.

As the environment continued to change in which the Council operated, it was important the organisation reviewed its Purpose, Priorities and Values to ensure they matched the focus and culture of the Council.

As part of the review of the Core Values, a consultation exercise was undertaken in 2015, enabling colleagues to choose the values of the Council. As part of this process, people picked values that they thought best reflected the culture of North Kesteven District Council and the behavioural expectation of colleagues.
